Susan Jane Rogers

Susan Jane Rogers, age 96, died, October 4, 2017. She was born in Greenwood, MS, September 23, 1921. She was preceded in death by her parents, Larkin Seymour Rogers and Lallye Townsend Rogers and her brother, Leslie Seymour Rogers ("Les"), all of Greenwood, MS. She is also preceded in death by her lifelong companion, friend, and colleague, Catherine Sale. Together Susan and Catherine established Tumbling Waters Camp, a summer camp and environmental education center for children in the North Georgia Mountains. Tumbling Waters Camp was in existence for 25 years and was ahead of its time in the field of environmental studies for children in outdoor classrooms.

      Susan was a friend to so many and recently was recognized in a ceremony marking the 75th anniversary of her sorority, Chi Omega. She has also been recognized for her service as a veteran of World War Il, where she served in the U.S. Navy. Susan loved the game of golf and often was heard saying, "it is a game where the least is the most and best". Susan was awarded Mississippi State Amateur Golf Champion in 1947. Above all, Susan was an educator and encouraged and assisted others to further their education. She will be missed by students, campers, counselors, friends, colleagues, caregivers and all who knew, loved and respected her as a mentor, leader and kind, generous friend.

      Susan's love of animals was evidenced by the many pets she cared for over the years. She was known to support the efforts of animal shelters and, indeed, was an advocate of all wildlife protection efforts.

      Susan loved poetry and was often overheard reciting lines from some of her favorite poems: The Daffodils; Sonnets from Shakespeare; and L'Envoi by Kipling ("When Earth's last picture is painted..."). She was an avid reader of magazines, cover to cover, The New York Times Magazine being her favorite source of current events and enjoyed sharing her knowledge and love of history. She will truly be missed and her quick wit, wisdom and sayings will live on. "What comes after 75?.. 76! That's the spirit!"

      Susan was cremated and requested that no memorial or funeral service be held. "And the night shall be filled with music, and the cares that infest the day, shall fold their tents like the Arabs, and as silently steal away."
