Henry Redmond Burkitt, Jr., passed away on January 18, 2012 at his home in Lakemont, GA. Born Feb. 28, 1939, in Nashville, TN, he was preceded in death by parents, Henry Sr., and Elizabeth. He is survived by his beloved wife of 23 years, Penny Burkitt; cherished son Eric Todd Burkitt of Charlotte, NC, and deeply loved daughter Ashley Burkitt Margulis of St. Louis, MO; grandchildren Lucas Clement Burkitt and Mary Stewart Rivers Burkitt, Thomas Burkitt Margulis and Katherine Elizabeth Margulis; stepdaughter, Mary Katherine Griffin of Atlanta and sister Mary Burkitt Johnson of Nashville, TN.
Henry graduated in 1957 from Nashville’s Hillsboro H.S., where he played sports and was an avid dancer. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Tennessee in 1962 and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. His first job was as a site inspector for Dupont, and he then progressed to a 40-plus-year career in medical supplies and equipment, retiring from McKesson Corp. in 2008 as a district manager. In 1989 he met and married Penny. They initially resided in Atlanta, spending many wonderful weekends at Lake Rabun, GA. After moving to Lakemont, he was a Lake Rabun Assn. volunteer for many years and helped with the annual Lake Rabun clean-up day. He also volunteered to help administer the Lake Rabun Foundation Scholarship Program. Henry was an eager Boy Scout, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, and he remained a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America throughout his lifetime. He was an avid motorcyclist, participated in a 4-wheel drive club and took pride in driving his Corvette.
A memorial service will be held at Beck Funeral Home in Clayton, GA on January 28, 2012 at 11 AM with Rev. Chuck Stutsman officiating. A post-memorial reception will take place at the Lake Rabun Hotel immediately thereafter.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers all remembrances go to Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter, PO Box 249, Tiger, GA 30576 or to the Boy Scouts Troop 40, 1004 Rainey Mtn. Road, Clayton, GA 30525.

I am very sorry for your loss. Although I did not know Henry, I know that it is very painful to lose someone you love. May the love of family and friends bring you comfort and may it give you hope to reflect on these promises from the Bible. John 5:28,29; Revelation 21:4; Psalms 37:11,29

I was very sorry to learn of Henry's passing. We first met in California in 1971 when we were sales reps together for Bard. We kept in touch over the years and I know he was a happy and proud family man and successful in business & life. I always enjoyed his sense of humor and will keep him in my prayers.
Sincerely,
Jack Addicks

I can't imagine a better uncle than Henry. His youthful exuberance was contagious. From going sledding with him as a child to firing his famous "potato gun" and getting VIP boat-tours of Lake Rabun as an adult, it was obvious that he cared about you and wanted you to have fun, too. Henry was a remarkable man who lived life to the fullest. We should too.

My sincere sympathy to you and the family. Henry and I grew up together - grammar school, high school, and college. We lost contact over the years, but fond memories of times gone by remained, including scouting and other adventures shared.

Henry will always have a special place in my heart as a gentle, patient, and caring southern man. As a "Yankee" myself, I had the pleasure of getting to know Henry at McKesson company events. Henry made a positive impact on my life and I want to wish his family my conolences and strenght in his absense. Rest in peace Henry, until we meet again. - Kurt
