John David Purvis, 29, of Alpharetta, Ga, and most recently of Tallulah Falls, Ga, passed away at his home on Thursday, March 29, 2012, concluding a 5 year battle with glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer. He was treated at the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center of Duke University and Georgia Cancer Specialists in Alpharetta, GA.

He was born in Atlanta, Ga on Feb. 5, 1983, son of William M. and Joy R. Purvis.
John was an Eagle Scout with Troop 87 of Roswell, Ga. He graduated from Centennial High School in Roswell, Ga in 2001, and Ga Southern University in 2005, with a BBA in Finance. John was a PADI Master Scuba Diver and trained boy scouts to scuba dive at BSA Florida Sea Base in the Florida Keys. He was a Founding Father of the Ga Southern University Chapter of Delta Chi Fraternity. John was a financial analyst for Verizon Business, and he was an enthusiastic supporter of the football team of his alma mater. Throughout his battle with cancer he had a Canine Assistant dog, Dreamy, who was the delight of John's life. For 5 years John supported and raised money for brain cancer research through the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation's Race for Research in Atlanta, Ga. John touched the lives of many people as a friend and man of deep faith in God.

John is survived by his parents; his brother Michael Purvis, and his wife Courtney Purvis of Mauldin, SC; and two nephews Tyler and Cory Purvis. He is also survived by his grandmother Ethel Purvis of Conyers, Ga and by several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 7, 2012, at 11:30 AM, at Lebanon Baptist Church, 11250 Crabapple Rd, Roswell, Ga, where he was a member. Visitation with the family will begin at 10:00AM in the sanctuary, and also after the service.  The service will be officiated by Dr. Richard Hester and Dr. Ronnie Hughes. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Canine Assistants (memo John Purvis Memorial Fund). Checks can be mailed to 3160 Francis Rd., Milton, GA 30004, or online at www.canineassistants.org.
