John "Jack" Lane Rayfield

John Lane “Jack” Rayfield passed away on Saturday April 21, 2018.

Jack was born on September 3, 1931 in Atlanta, Georgia to Mr. Frederick Harvey Rayfield and Mrs. Mildred Smathers Rayfield. Jack spent his childhood there, and attended North Fulton High School in Buckhead. Jack continued his education at Georgia Tech before joining the United States Marine Corps.

Jack served his country honorably and after his service, he began his career at Potter & Rayfield, Inc. He continued working there as president until his retirement. Jack then began working in real estate, selling homes around his beloved Lake Burton for Ed West Realty, and he served as President of the Lake Burton Civic Association from 1990 thru 1992. He then moved to St. Simons, Georgia. The mountains eventually called Jack home, and he returned to Rabun County where he happily resided at Cannonwood in Tiger, Georgia.

He is survived by his sister, Betty Rayfield Milner, of Hoschton, Georgia; his sons, John Lane “Johnny” Rayfield, of Batesville, Gilmer Weston “Wes” Rayfield, of Clayton, Frederick Curtis “Rick” Rayfield, of Sautee; Grandson, Alex Rayfield, of Las Vegas, Nevada; several nieces and nephews also survive him.

A memorial service will take place on Saturday, May 19th, 2018 at “Fred’s Shed” located behind the Mountain Patrol Office at 6 Fred’s Place Lane, Lakemont, GA 30552. The memorial service will begin at 2:00 pm with a Celebration of Life to be held immediately following.
