Bert (McKay) Lovell Obituary

Bert McKay Lovell, 85, was a native of Rabun County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Percy and Ruby Keener McKay, and the 5th of 8 children.

Bert was born and raised in Lakemont, and had a true love for the mountains- every time she was out and about in Rabun County, she exclaimed over the beauty surrounding her. She also loved driving around Lakes Rabun, Burton, Seed, Tallulah. She always considered the mountains “home”.

Bert graduated from Rabun County High School, after eloping with the “boy next door” Elbert Howard Lovell, and they were married for 64 years. Bert and Elbert had 2 daughters, Terri and Amy, who they raised in Atlanta, Georgia, and a beloved granddaughter, Roxy. Bert worked for the family pool business for many years, and also worked for Parisiennes department store for several years. After Elbert’s death in 2020, Bert was determined to move back to her beloved mountains, and settled in Tiger, Georgia.

Bert loved her family deeply, and was deeply loved in return. She has numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and even great great nieces and nephews who were very important to her, and she relished time spent with them.

Bert was her family’s fiercest advocate, as well as an “in house” interior design consultant- she loved helping get things decorated and fixed up for any members of the family setting up house, and sewed all types of drapes and window coverings.  Bert enjoyed belonging to her local garden club, and loved flowers of all varieties. Bert was an artist, and painted many scenes from places she had visited. Bert was also active in her local church, and had many friends there.

Bert is survived by daughters Terri and Amy Lovell, granddaughter Roxy Brown; brothers Curtis (Sherri), Kenneth (Judy), and Richard (Lynn) McKay, sister in law Audrey (David) Breg, and multiple nieces and nephews. Bert was predeceased by her parents, Percy and Ruby McKay, husband Elbert Lovell, sister Barbara (Hoyt) Ramey, brothers JL (Jewell) McKay, Junior (JoAnn) McKay, and Tommy (Virginia) McKay, and brother in law Kenneth (Fumi) Lovell.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Bert’s name to Outsiders Farm & Sanctuary, Attention Corrine Baker, 131 Buck Hollow, Bowersville, GA 30516.
