Betty F. Miles, 80, of Charleston, SC, passed away on October 25, 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
Betty was a follower of Jesus Christ and she gave her life to Him at a young age. She lived her life always caring for others before herself and she was an incredible example of the way Christ loves us and she tried to demonstrate that love to everyone she knew. She loved to serve her family, friends, and business associates - and she fiercely loved her 14 grandchildren (and her great grandchildren).
Betty was born on November 17, 1942 to Frank and Florrie Fili in Philadelphia, PA. Her family moved to Charleston, SC where Betty attended St. Andrews High School. She graduated in 1960 and then went on to earn a BA in English from the University of South Carolina in 1963. She then enrolled at UNC and was a standout law student at UNC but chose not to finish for the sake of her family.
Her first job, which she loved, was being a 3rd grade English teacher. She later moved into sales and became highly successful in network marketing and helping others accomplish their goals. Betty was an entrepreneur, author, coach, and motivational speaker who loved teaching and inspiring others.
In 1962, she met Henry W. Hankinson, Jr. (Bill) who was attending The Citadel. They married and had three boys, Henry W. Hankinson, III (Billy), Clinton Talbot Hankinson (Clint) and John Francis Hankinson (John). Betty later married James Melvin Miles (Jim), former SC Secretary of State, who had two sons, Melvin Miles (Mel) and Jeffrey Miles (Jeff).
Betty was predeceased by her mother, father, sisters Sharon Fili Rexford and Frances Fili McSwain (Fran), and stepson Jeffrey Miles. She is survived by her brother John Fili, sister Ria Fili York, husband Jim, and her sons Billy (Kerry), Clint (Bonnie), John (Molly), Mel (Shelley) their families and Jeffrey Miles’ family.
