Debra Faye Butler Obituary

Debra Faye McCray Butler, 61, of Rabun County, Georgia, died on Monday January 30th, 2023 after a year-long battle with cancer. She is survived by her husband Jeff Butler and son Chris Butler.

Born on September 6 th, 1961 in Hayesville, North Carolina, she was the daughter of Helen McCray Oliver and the late Richard Arlin Cody, and stepdaughter to Ralph Oliver.

Deb graduated from Hayesville High School in 1979 and then attended Tri-County Community College where she earned an associate degree in Accounting. Upon graduation, she worked in office

management in North Carolina and Georgia for many years before settling in as a Real Estate agent in Rabun County in 2000.

Deb loved to camp and fish. She also enjoyed the antique car community after she and Jeff joined the Peach State Cadillac Club and National Cadillac Club. Deb cherished the friendships she made through their shared interest.

Deb was most known and loved as a very active member of her community. She was involved in many non-profit and charitable organizations in Rabun County, including her own that she started, “Toiletries for Teens”. She served as president of the Rabun County Board of Realtors and was active with The Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, and Rotary. She was instrumental in bringing the Food Bank to Rabun County and assisted Richard Powers in starting Richard’s Kids.

Deb knew no stranger and made every effort to be a friend and aide to everyone. She lived by the phrase “Do something good for someone today (D.S.G.F.S.T)” and urged others to do the same.

In addition to her husband and son, Deb is survived by her 3 sisters, Elizabeth Anderson, Olivia

Anderson, and Cynthia Oliver of Hayesville, North Carolina; one brother, Kenneth Oliver of Hayesville, North Carolina along with numerous Aunts, Uncles, Nieces, Nephews, In-laws, and her beloved dog Abby.

Services will be held at Beck’s Funeral Home in Clayton, GA on Saturday February 11, 2023 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm with the memorial service starting at 3:30 pm. During the service one of Deb’s final requests was to allow anyone an opportunity to speak.
