Dorothy Nell (Ramey) Beck Obituary
Dorothy Nell Ramey Beck, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away surrounded by her loving family.
Dorothy was born to the late James Robert Ramey and the late Carrie Lee Pannell Ramey. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Horace Ona Ramey, who passed at age 19; her husband, Warren Richard Beck Sr.; and her son, Warren Richard Beck Jr.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Karen Beck Franklin and husband Marty, and her son, Sam Beck and wife Fredda Bradley Beck. She also leaves behind a host of cherished grandchildren Jamie Franklin Guffie (Jake), Katie Beth Franklin Watts (John), Taylor Beck Tibbetts (Austin), Carrie Beck and great-grandchildren Jackson Guffie, Jarrett Guffie, Maelee Watts, Boone Watts, Beck Tibbetts, all of whom were the light of her life.
A 1961 graduate of Rabun County High School, Dorothy went on to earn her cosmetology license in 1962. She owned and operated a beauty shop in Toco Hill, DeKalb County, alongside her aunt, Ruth Ramey Evans.
After marrying Warren, the couple moved to Cornelia, Georgia, where their son Warren Jr. was born. Warren’s career with Burlington Industries later took them to Glasgow, Virginia, where their daughter Karen was born, before they returned to Rabun County, where their son Sam completed the family.
Together, Dorothy and Warren owned and operated several successful local businesses, including Susie Q Laundromat, the Sears Catalog Store, and later the Stonebrook Inn, which they managed until 1996. Dorothy also worked with her sons for many years at the Stonebrook Restaurant, where her kindness and welcoming spirit touched everyone she met.
Dorothy and her family shared many wonderful summers at their Lake Burton home. She loved spending time on the lake with friends, creating countless lasting memories with her children—swimming, skiing, and taking boat rides to LaPrade’s or Kastner’s Store for fried chicken picnics on the water. Those summers by the lake were among her happiest times and reflected her love of family, friendship, and fun.
Dorothy had a natural talent for decorating and loved hosting family gatherings and special occasions. She was known for her sweet, gentle nature, her compassion, and her unwavering optimism. She saw the best in everyone and was always the same warm, gracious person each time you met her.
Dorothy and Warren shared a love for travel and were fortunate to explore many parts of the world together. Yet, no matter where life took her, her family remained the center of her heart. She was a devoted, loving, and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew her.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the devoted caregivers who provided such compassionate and attentive care to Dorothy. A special thank you to Carolyn Grant, Sue Overholt, Gail McCoy, Lisa Tallent, and Wanda Loggins. Your kindness, dedication, and support meant so much during this time, and we are deeply appreciative of all you have done. We would also like to thank NP Shannon Robinson for taking such good care of Dorothy.
