James Adolph Zobel, Jr., age 90, passed away at home in Clayton, Georgia, June 23, 2023. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Zoe Ann Boulware Zobel.
Mr. Zobel was born January 10, 1933, in Birmingham, Alabama, the son of James Adolph Zobel, Sr. and Helen Lee Wright Zobel.
A graduate of Auburn University, he served nearly twelve years as a combat crew member in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command. When that service ended, he enjoyed subsequent careers in banking and building contracting.
Mr. Zobel was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church in Clayton, Georgia, serving as Senior Warden during an important period of membership growth and construction.
He was a volunteer with the Lakes Fire Department and served as captain in the Wildcat Fire Department for many years.
After retiring, he had the good fortune to be able to travel extensively with his wife. They went on many adventures with his sister and brother-in-law Jane and Harry Butler. Jim had an avid interest in genealogy. He was able to trace his ancestry, as well as his wife’s, back over many generations.
Mr. Zobel is preceded in death by son, Scott Zobel, sister, Bette (Bob) Shortridge, and grandson, Michael Moore.
Survivors include- son, Bruce Zobel and daughter, Gail Zobel Moore, sister, Jane Butcher, brothers, Bob (Terry) Zobel, and Tom (Debbie) Zobel. Also surviving are grandsons, Andrew (Melissa) Moore, Matthew (Stephany) Moore, Kayla Zobel and Mallory (Chaise) Rubek, daughter in law, Karen Reeves Zobel, granddaughter in law, Christie Haynes Moore, three great grandchildren, and eight nieces and nephews.
Memorial service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church in Clayton, Georgia on June 30, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Interment of ashes will be in church memorial garden with a reception to follow in the parish hall.
