Martha Jane Currie Christian passed away on January 16, 2025 at home with her husband, George Christian, by her side.

Martha was born in Forest Park, Georgia on April 29, 1950.

Martha and George celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in June of last year. They were married in 1972 after being high school sweethearts.

Martha received an A.B. from Georgia State University in 1972. Thereafter, she taught school in North Carolina while George was serving in the U.S. Navy at Camp Lejeune.

They relocated to Athens, Georgia in 1973 where she received a Master of Education from the University of Georgia in 1974 and thereafter served as the high school counselor for Morgan County High School.

In 1977, they moved to Macon, Georgia where Martha graduated from the Walter F. George School of Law in 1980 with honors and on Law Review. Martha practiced law in Macon until appointed to the Superior Court Bench by Governor Zell Miller in 1994. She served as the first woman Superior Court Judge in the Macon Judicial Circuit and later served as the Chief Judge of the Circuit.

While in Macon, Martha supported both private and public institutions including Wesleyan College and the Museum of Arts and Sciences. She served on the Georgia Council of Superior Court Judges.

Martha retired from the bench in December of 2011, as did George from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Middle District of Georgia, so that they could fulfill a long time dream and goal of moving to Rabun County where they built a home in 1993.

While her professional career was highly successful and rewarding, her true calling was her love and devotion to God and her family.

Martha was the “stone foundation” for the family. She counseled, mentored, loved and guided four generations of family members. Over the years, she spent countless days and weeks with family, caring for them in hospitals and at their homes.

Martha and George’s home in the mountains was a year round meeting place for family and friends. So many wonderful life-long memories were made at their home. Nothing made Martha happier than to be in the mountains with her George Robert taking rides in their Jeep.

Martha had an insatiable appetite for books. She was well read on a number of subject matters and was always wanting to know more about the matters of this world.

Her Bibles and religious readings were used daily and were by her bedside and her reading chair. Her faith was unwavering and guided her every decision throughout her life.

Martha’s father, William Monroe Currie Jr. preceded her in 1971.

Martha’s survivors include her husband, George; mother, Beverly Jane Barton Collins of McDonough; sisters, Linda Drake of Roswell, Rebecca Currie of Alpharetta; Donna Gossett (Bo) of Greenville, SC, and Beverly Currie of McDonough; brother-in-laws, Tom Christian (Connie) of McIntyre and Mike Christian of Ellijay; nieces, Rachel Broach (Stan), Currie Gossett (Prosser), Janie Marchbanks (David), Emily Wiegert (Dave), Maggie Daniels (Ron), Callie Ortiz (Juan Carlos), and Reese Christian; nephew, Dillon Currie; great nieces, Avery Marchbanks, Bowen Jane Marchbanks, Lucy Wiegert, Abby Wiegert, and Joanna Daniels; great nephews, Tripp Marchbanks, Drake Douglas, Garrett Douglas, Logan Carnegie, and Luke Carnegie.

The family will have a private service and burial. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
